Is killing wolves the only option?
It's ludicrous to me that states choose killing to solve wolf problems. Perhaps it's the easiest for them. If animals stand between them and making money, the animal is always the loser. It happens with the Yellowstone Buffalo...they are shot if they leave the boundries, Cloud's herd of wild horses was just rounded up by BLM and if they're not adopted, they're auctioned off for kill. Wolves, they just shoot and it only seems more states are joining in, thanks to that Jackass Ken Salazar. It's all driven by greed, unfortunately for the animals. :((

I agree, it is so sad, and barbaric, to hunt down these beautifull animals! What are they doing, or what have they done to deserve this treatment?! Oh yes, now I remember.......its the american way. It started the day we came to america and took the land from the Indians, and then we killed them because we said THEY were uncivilized!!!!!! I get so disgusted with people when they act in this way, it just makes me sick! Ever since time began, we ( human beings ) have always destroyed anything that gets in our own selfish way! whatever it may be.
Could someone please tell me who ken salazar is please?

He's Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior. He has the power to help stop the wolf killing by adding them to the endangered list but he won't/hasn't. :(

SENATOR ALLEN CHRISTENSEN OF UTAH IS EITHER SO CORRUPT AND ARROGANT THAT HE IS INTENTIONALLY SPREADING LIES & FALSE INFORMATION OR HE IS SO STUPID & INCOMPETENT THAT HE CANNOT DISTINGUISH FACT FROM PROPAGANDA. Most likely it is a combination of his corruption and stupidity. Arrogance, corruption, incompetence and stupidity are not desireable traits in any politician. The American people are fed up with politicians like him.
Here is his exact response to someone who addressed their concerns about wolf conservation to him:
"You live in la-la land. The reintroduced wolves are large canadian wolves not the previous ones put here by nature. No animal can stand up to a pack of 10-20 wolves, thus the wildlife populations suffer. Also much killing is done by the wolves just because they can and not for survival. You are chosing to believe one side of the issue and I believe the other. Ask the people that live with them. They tell me that these wolves are unmanageable and uncontrolable. I trust they will be invading your area soon and I hope you then remember our conversation. Senator Christensen"
First of all "You live in la-la land" is a response someone would expect from a 12 year old, not a US senator. The senator is either intentionally lying or he is too incompetent & stupid to know what he is talking about. There is little genetic difference between gray wolves from across north america. (1) There is practically no difference between the gray wolves from Canada and those that were in the western United States.(2) This has been clarified with new techniques such as molecular genetics. (3) In other words, there is no difference between "canadian" wolves & "previous ones put here by nature". All of senator Christensen's statments are false, including "these wolves are killing just because they can." That happens only rarely and in uncommon situations. It is rare for wolves to kill wild prey in surplus. If wolves occasionally do kill more than they can immediately eat, they are responding normally to a situation that is drastically different than usual.(4) In areas where wolves have been absent for some time, the prey have become more vunerable. The prey will quickly adapt to the presence of wolves, and the small ammount of surplus killing he is refering to will be nothing to worry about. Restoring wolves will increase overall species diversity and help restore the balance of nature.(5)
After reviewing the current scientific literature, I have come to the inevitable conclusion that Senator Allen Christensen is an incompetent moron of such limited intelligence that he is unfit to be a US senator.

I would like to know what the politicians mean by "unruly" and "unmanagable"? They talk like they are someones kids, who aren't behaving properly!!! These are wild animals who hunt for food, they don't have the luxury to go to McDonalds and order a Big Mac!!!!! What's wrong with these politicians!!!!! What's wrong with people!

There is a really good and balanced article in the newest National Geographic about this issue. It provides the actual statistics on the number of livestock believed to be killed by wolves and profiles alternative methods, such as Range Riders, for controlling the kills.

I have a better Idea but need help promoting it. There are people proving that wolves respect other wolves territories by playng sounds of howling packs over loudspeakers. If farmers were to hand raise 4 or 5 docile wolves and give them free range of the property it would then become another packs territory. Problem solved!

What can I say? We voted them in that position. It's not right what Americans do, it never is, and well all we can do is hope that one day they'll fall down bump there head and get there ideas straight. Killing is never the solution, especailly if the killed has no defense whatsoever. I mean we might as well kill prisoners since they take up space and are "unruly" and "unmanagable." Not saying I've lost hope but all we can really do is fight for what is right and not give up on these, and any other, beautiful animals that are truly special.

I also read this article. It was very insightful. I have also seen unbiased documentaries about wolves and the misunderstanding and slaughter of them in the U.S. I don't believe in what the ranchers are doing (site killing, private hunts), but I understand their plight. They are now resorting to desperate measures because they don't understand the wolf and are looking for an immediate solution. I believe they first need to understand the nature of wolves and how a pack works, including hunts and kill. From there, they may be able to come up with a solution that works for both parties.
In Africa, large cats were blamed for many sheep deaths (although I'm sure hynena and wild dogs were in the mix too). A program was devised where Anatolan Mountain Dogs were raised from pups to live among the sheep. They are guard dogs by nature. Since living with sheep full-time (they kind of look like them -- big, white, fluffy), they naturally protect them and ward off large predators and alert the herders or villagers. The game animals think of them as another predatory animal and to this date, there have been no dog deaths by a predator. The program is free for the herders and both dog and man are trained in the eventual goal of protecting sheep.
Perhaps a similar program could be invented for the cattle ranchers, but perhaps with a mix of Malamute and/or Heelers (Australian Cattle Dogs) or even a Kelpie (though smaller). The temperament, intelligence and natural instincts of these types of dogs might be ideal in deterring wolves from coming too close to the cattle. This program could also be free to cattle ranchers to encourage them to use such alternative measures. I also like the idea of the howling wolves recording to deter them from entering a protected area. However, more research should be put into what the howling means to the encroaching pack. You certainly don't want to say, "Hey, everybody! Lunch is on me!"
One last word...writing to senators, congressmen, and the like, even protesting seems to fall on deaf ears. I would like to invite these men and women to meet the wolves in person...to touch and feel them, to be with them if only for one day. Through mutual understanding lies compassion.

Barbaric minded PPL are what make the world a pretty sick place..Sometimes it's totally embarrassing to have to admit that I, myself, am a human..Animals know what real Love is; especially the Wolves! Their families are their life goal..When a member is lost, they grieve & feel pain much LIKE humans! Until the human race, as a whole, can reach a peaceful situation with the Wild Wolves & learn to live in harmony with these spritual creatures, Peace in any form will never come to be..We can learn so much from the Wolves..They are NOT barbaric..Nature put them at the top of the food chain to do their job & they are being crusified & slaughtered for living the only way they know how; By their insticts..Humans live for calculated, pre-meditated power & greed..What is it? The one who dies with the most notches in his Gun wins?..Yes, the world is a sick place because of humans..The PPL who stand against the ugliness of these sick, uncaring monsters must never give up the fight, because we are on the right side & see Nature as it was intended to be; uncontrolled by MAN!

Hi, Andrea,
Unfortunately, you are so right. Humans are the only animal that hunts for sport, and we are the only ones who hunt with tools that nature did not give us in order to kill other animals (thus giving us an unfair advantage). Sure, stones and arrows is one thing...but a rifle? There's got to be a better way to control the unmitigated "culling" of wolves.
