Nina didn't know that her life would be transformed when she woke up one spring morning a few months ago. “Some wolves are coming to the residential treatment home … that’s cool!” she thought. Nina had been abused and neglected as a child. She grew up in a hostile environment, being segregated and bullied at school, feeling unwelcome everywhere she went. As a young adult Nina carried huge anger, resentment, and mistrust … her heart was closed. She was also agoraphobic, afraid of open spaces, of being in nature, walking on dirt or cracking dry leaves that she had a hard time leaving the house or even her room and she couldn't step on cracks on the floor, so she would tiptoe around the house hopping from tile to tile. In an effort to numb the pain she turned to alcohol and drugs which landed Nina in the rehab center where these events took place. Her therapists didn't know how to help her and she was losing hope. That’s the world Nina knew … but not that day.

As she was getting ready that morning, a 120lb timberwolf named Miko walked into her room and gently convinced her to come out of the house and join everyone outside. Nina learned the first Wolf Principle: “Wolves are always OK with who they are” and she felt an instant bond of trust and strength. When the group of humans and wolves began hiking up the trail, she decided to come along. A whole mile into the mountains, Nina was still hiking enthusiastically next to the wolves, that’s when she learned the second Wolf Principle: “Wolves give 100% to everything they do.” She began feeling a forgotten sense of confidence, perhaps from when she was a little child when she didn't have a care in the world, she wasn't sure, all she knew was that she wanted to inhabit this new sense of inner peace and freedom, she wanted to run with the wolves and jump and laugh! She heard another Wolf Principle during this outing: “Wolves explore all the time, they don’t come with judgments and pre-conceived ideas.” YES! She heard an inner voice saying and she decided to approach her favorite wolf and introduce herself the way she was told, but Miko the wolf had further plans. As Nina knelt down, Miko came to her as a long-time friend, licking Nina’s face and leaning on her until she sat on Nina’s lap, causing her to fall back on the ground. For several minutes they rolled and rolled on the dirt and fallen leaves in complete freedom and joy, human and wolf as one.

Nina’s smile was unforgettable. All she could say over and over was “wait till doctor Silverman finds out” (her Psychiatrist). Miko changed Nina’s life that morning … IT WAS A THIS-IS-IT MOMENT FOR NINA. As a result Nina was discharged from the residential treatment home earlier than expected, she applied for a therapy dog and, with its help, she is now working and back in college.

Although there was press - Fox40 News coverage, an article on www.pawnation.com and a ton of attention on Facebook, no one stepped forward as the owner of this gentle giant. Pictures of this guy lit up excited debates about what kind of dog he could possibly be with the final consensus being that this 120 pounder must have jumped right out of Game of Thrones.

After seeing the pictures, we knew right off the bat that our mystery dog is not your everyday dog and we contacted the shelter to let them know that we would be happy to rescue him. After researching our website and talking with us about our purpose and programs, the shelter's manager Gina Knepp decided that Wolf Connection was the best place for him to have a well-balanced life, so we made arrangements and we're scheduled to head up to Sacramento tomorrow morning to pick up our newest WC pack member.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

With the rescue...

Unfortunately, as many know, once a wolf or wolfdog is placed in a rescue, it cannot be readopted but must be euthanized by state law so we're relieved we found out about him in time. We're not about to let that happen on our watch! We've spent the week working hard to prepare his new home for him and planning the trip but it's expensive: gas, lodging, shelter fees, vaccinations, not to mention food - this guy apparently eats 4 times what the other canines are eating!

With his name...

With your donation of $10 or more, you will get the opportunity to name our new guy. Once he arrives and we have a few days to get to know him, the WC team will choose the most suited name from our donor's suggestions and announce it to our community. The winner will also have the opportunity to come up to the ranch and meet him face to face!

So join us in our rescue and know you've helped save a life.

What’s that up in Acton? It comes in all different kinds of species. The come gray, black, brown and many other colors. They are illegal to have as pets and have four legs and are very nice. Do you guys know what I’m talking about? If you guessed wolves, you are correct.

Wolves can live in any place that is cold. They can survive the heat, but they don’t like being in it. They survive the best in cold weather like Alaska, Canada, Iceland, Russia and in some places in the United States. You can see that most wolves like to live in the cold weather, because it is the easiest to survive. They can hunt for their food easier, because a lot of the animals live in the cold weather.

There’s all different kinds of wolf species like the gray wolf, timber wolf, red wolf and many other kinds of species. I am going to talk about the gray wolf and the timber wolf. The gray wolves snout, sharp teeth, thick fur, long legs, narrow chest, pliable paws and a furry tail is what makes up the gray wolf. They howl to meet up and sleep for the night. They grow till 26-33 inches tall and 6.5 feet long and they can weigh up to 175 pounds. They are most active at night, but may be seen in the day.

Wolves are meat eaters, but they will eat other foods like elk, moose, earthworms, berries, grasshoppers, mice, birds and many more foods. They eat they’re food very fast to protect it from being stolen abd ti decrease the chance of an attack. Pups are fed by the adults so they don’t eat a piece too big.

Now you know about where wolves live, what kinds of wolves there are and their diet. If you go to WolfConnection.org you will see many wolves and even my cousin and me with the wolves. THANK YOU

From Ancestral Wolf to Modern Dog

This finding puts the first known domestication — that of dogs — in the same place as the domestication of plants and other animals, and strengthens the link between the first animal to enter human society and the subsequent invention of agriculture about 10,000 years ago.

A Middle Eastern origin for the dog also fits in better with the archaeological evidence, and has enabled geneticists to reconstruct the entire history of the dog, from the first association between wolves and hunter gatherers some 20,000 years ago to the creation by Victorian dog fanciers of many of today’s breeds.

A research team led by Bridgett M. vonHoldt and Robert K. Wayne of the University of California, Los Angeles, has analyzed a large collection of wolf and dog genomes from around the world. Scanning for similar runs of DNA, the researchers found that the Middle East was where wolf and dog genomes were most similar, although there was another area of overlap between East Asian wolves and dogs. Wolves were probably first domesticated in the Middle East, but after dogs had spread to East Asia there was a crossbreeding that injected more wolf genes into the dog genome, the researchers conclude in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature.

The archaeological evidence supports this idea, since some of the earliest dog remains have been found in the Middle East, dating from 12,000 years ago. The only earlier doglike remains occur in Belgium, at a site 31,000 years old, and in western Russia from 15,000 years ago.

Humans lived as roaming hunters and gatherers for most of their existence. Dr. Wayne believes that wolves began following hunter-gatherer bands to feed on the wounded prey, carcasses or other refuse. At some stage a group of wolves, who happened to be smaller and less threatening than most, developed a dependency on human groups, and may in return have provided a warning system.

Several thousand years later, in the first settled communities that began to appear in the Middle East 15,000 years ago, people began intervening in the breeding patterns of their camp followers, turning them into the first proto-dogs. One of the features they selected was small size, continuing the downsizing of the wolf body plan. “I think a long history such as that would explain how a large carnivore, which can eat you, eventually became stably incorporated in human society,” Dr. Wayne said.

The wolf DNA in the study was collected over many years by Dr. Wayne from wolf packs around the world. A colleague, Elaine Ostrander, gathered much of the dog DNA by persuading owners at dog shows to let her take a scraping of cells from inside the cheek. The dog genome has been decoded twice: scientists at the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass., have sequenced the boxer’s genome, and Craig Venter, a pioneer of DNA sequencing, has decoded his poodle’s genome.

With these two genomes in hand, the Broad Institute designed a dog SNP chip, similar to those used to scan the human for genetic disease. SNPs, or “snips,” are sites of common variation along the DNA. Affymetrix, a SNP chip maker, manufactured the dog SNP chip for Dr. Wayne’s team, letting him have 1,000 chips free, though thereafter they cost $250 apiece. The dog SNP chip brought to light the close relationship between dogs and wolves in the Middle East and also the genetic relationship between various breeds.

Dr. Wayne was surprised to find that all the herding dogs grouped together, as did all the sight hounds and the scent hounds, making a perfect match between dogs’ various functions and the branches on the genetic tree. “I thought there would be many ways to build a herding dog and that they’d come from all over the tree, but there are not,” Dr. Wayne said.

His team has also used the dog SNP chip to scan for genes that show signatures of selection. One such favored dog gene has a human counterpart that has been implicated in Williams syndrome, where it causes exceptional gregariousness. Another two selected genes are involved in memory. Dogs, unlike wolves, are adept at taking cues from human body language, and the two genes could have something to do with this faculty, Dr. Wayne said.

An earlier survey of dog origins, based on a small genetic element known as mitochondrial DNA, concluded that dogs had been domesticated, probably just once, in East Asia. The author of the survey, Peter Savolainen of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, said he was not convinced by the new report for several reasons, including that it did not sample dogs in East Asia from south of the Yangtze, the region where the diversity of mitochondrial DNA is highest. Also archaeologists in China have been less interested in distinguishing dog and wolf remains, he said.

Two other experts on dog genetics, Carlos Driscoll and Stephen O’Brien, of the National Cancer Institute, said they believed that Dr. Wayne’s team had made a convincing case. “I think they have nailed the locale of dog domestication to the Middle East,” Dr. O’Brien said in an e-mail message from Siberia, where he is attending a tiger management workshop.

Dog domestication and human settlement occurred at the same time, some 15,000 years ago, raising the possibility that dogs may have had a complex impact on the structure of human society. Dogs could have been the sentries that let hunter gatherers settle without fear of surprise attack. They may also have been the first major item of inherited wealth, preceding cattle, and so could have laid the foundations for the gradations of wealth and social hierarchy that differentiated settled groups from the egalitarianism of their hunter-gatherer predecessors. Notions of inheritance and ownership, Dr. Driscoll said, may have been prompted by the first dogs to permeate human society, laying an unexpected track from wolf to wealth.

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could do so, and she dictated these words:

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could do so, and she dictated these words:

"Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.
I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.
Love, Meredith"

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, 'To Meredith' in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies.' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

"Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.
Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.
Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find. I am wherever there is love.
I just wanted you to know that My friend and I will be there on Saturday for Sunset Hike with Wolves. I was suggested to RSVP to this website, but I couldn’t find any column to do it. Hopefully, this would work to let you know that two of us will be participating in the event on Saturday. Thank you.

They all have shown great behavioral improvements from the change of location ALONE!! AMAZING! They all seem to love their new super-sized kennels, and couldn't be happier!

Our team is constantly keeping tabs on every detail of every part of our surroundings at the new property. We are are always making adjustments and improvements for the well-being and comfort of our animals, and youth volunteers. That being said, we have a new adjustment that we have all agreed is necessary for the improvement of our animals' living spaces. The current flooring of the kennel space is the natural high-dessert dirt that covers most of the surrounding area on the property. It tends to get messy with the different weathers and is sometimes difficult to get clean!!

We have determined that the best solution to our problem is simply lining all of our kennels in Decomposed Granite. It is an absorbent sand/gravel that helps prevent odor, and leftover residue after cleaning. It is comfortable for the animals to lay and walk around on as well.

If anyone has any information on where we can get DG donate in large quantities, or even some that we can buy at a discounted price, PLEASE let us know! As with all donations, we will provide a market value tax deduction.

Thank you so much for all of your support, and involvement in our program, we love you all!!

Kelly then hugged Maya on her neck, and once again in amazement, Maya put her head down softly around Kelly and closed her eyes, as if to squeeze her and hug her back. They stayed like that for a few seconds ... I couldn't believe what I was seeing with my very own eyes. Kelly then kissed Maya on the nose and went back to her parents.

I stopped, and matched her gaze, and said as I looked at her bright blue eyes "You want to know what I think?" She nodded her head. "I think bald is beautiful." I started working with Teo and the wolves and wolf dogs at Villalobos on October 31, 2009. I was like a kid in the candy store, given the opportunity to work one-on-one with wolves!! I have always loved animals and always knew that animals are my calling. Every since the start, I have always been attracted to Maya, a very high content F1 Arctic Wolf. To this day, I’m still not sure what attracted me, but I had strong feelings for her. Even though I had never worked with her until my first Sunset Hike.

November 28, 2009. One month after working with Teo and the pack, and my first Sunset Hike. While people were arriving, Teo, Drew, Dani, and I were up at the kennels getting the wolves out and taking them down to the hikers. Baron and Maya were the last two left. Teo asked me to do the “maneuver” with him to get Maya. Maya needed a female to put her leash on, but at the time she wasn’t 100% about it. I had never worked with her before, but I wanted to try. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the leash on her. We tried a couple more times, but it didn’t work. Maya seemed to be a bit skittish that afternoon, which she wasn’t early in the day on our morning hike. Teo didn’t want to leave her behind, because she is one of our top program animals…but we had no choice. When we went down, Teo asked Tia, the owner of Villalobos, to go up with me and try to put a leach on her. Tia had told us that for some reason, Maya loves her. So, we made the trek back up to the kennels, and with ease, Tia was able to put Maya’s leash on. I thanked Tia as she handed Maya’s leash to me, and we were off to go meet everyone. When I got down to where everyone was gathered, Teo had asked me to walk her for the hike. So she can be with someone she knows, since she seemed to be a bit nervous.

I was very excited to be walking her. A high-content Arctic Wolfdog, by my side, setting off into the mountains to watch the sun set. She was great and we had a wonderful time together. During the hike, I was just trying to be there for her and comfort her, knowing something seemed to have bothered her earlier.

From then on, she became more comfortable with me and I started to work with her more. She was getting better with the leash and she would look for me every time I arrived. We then had an event out at the America’s Teaching Zoo where I go to school. She and Baron, her kennelmate, traveled with me and my parents in our Suburban there and back. She was so good with the crowd of people and the little kids. When we were there, I spent most of my time with her. She was wonderful being in a new place and it being a long day. I was proud of her.

I kept working with her, and she only kept improving. Every day I spent with her at Villalobos, our bond grew stronger. When I go into her kennel with her, she will sit at my feet and lick my face excessively. And when I stop petting her, she will lick my face more and lean against me for me to continue scratching her. She is so sweet.

Monday, January 18, 2010. Since this cold and rainy weather, we have been putting hay in the wolves adobe houses and around there kennels to keep them warm and cozy. This past Wednesday, we put some fresh hay down in all of the kennels. As I was spreading the hay around in Maya and Baron‘s kennel, Maya would just sit at my feet and catch some of the falling strands in her mouth. She looked like a little puppy with hay all over her face and a little hanging from her mouth.

It had stopped raining for a moment, so we decided to do some turnouts. We let Zimba and Rocky out first with Wyoh and Tala. After they were done and put away, we put Maya, Baron and Bandit out to play with Tala and Wyoh. I ran up and down the hill with them a bit and then they went around sniffing and marking the bushes.

After some time, I walked up to the top of the turnout, and Maya and Baron followed me. I stayed up there for a few minutes, and then turned to head back down to where Teo, Dani and everyone else were standing. I walked about thirty feet, when I felt the sudden urge to look over my shoulder to see where Maya was. As I turned, my brown eyes made contact with her stunning, yellow, wolf eyes. At that moment, I felt so connected with her, that I, unconsciously, knelt down on my left knee and called out “Maya, come.” In my amazement, she came running down the hill towards me with a look of joy. When she reached me, she licked my face repeatedly as I scratched her chest in praise. I was so astonished that she actually came to me when I called. I felt linked to her, as if our spirits were one. It was one of the most extraordinary feelings inside of me that I have ever felt with such a magnificent animal.

My bond with her has only been growing stronger, and I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to work with her every week. She is a marvelous wolf and making great progress.

We have a new member to our ever-growing pack! She is a one-year-old, jet black, high-content wolfdog with piercing gold eyes and her name is Taboo!. She is beautiful, friendly, filled with energy and fascinated with everyone and everything. But the story of how we found her is also very fascinating so Teo asked me to share it with you.

Tuesday morning I was working with Teo on the new Wolf Connection site and he mentioned to me that he had gotten a call from a friend ours, Chris, saying he had heard that a wolf had been sent to a pound in Northridge and was going to be euthanized. Chris and Glen and a few other staff members called every pound in the area to no avail.

As you probably know, if a wolfdog goes to the pound they don't usually last more than a day or two before they put them to sleep. So Paula (my wife) decided to help and do some more research on the source of the information. She called Chris and left a message.

The next day while sitting in traffic at 8am on the 405, Paula was driving me to the chiropractor because I hurt my back the day before doing construction on the new site. That's when she got the call. It was Chris. I was trying to make sense of what they were talking about because as she talked on her bluetooth I could only hear on side of the conversation. Now it seemed the wolf was tied to a tree and left in the backyard of an abandoned house and was not in the pound at all. I kept trying to interject and ask questions only to be shushed. "I'll tell you in a minute." she said, "Hold on." But what house? Where? Who told him? My back was killing me, the traffic was awful, and I was starting to think that someone was messing with us. Finally Paula got of the phone and the story got even more convoluted. Chris had a aunt who lived out-of-state and she had a friend who lived on a street called Community Street in Northridge. Apparently her friend knew a family that had a wolf and they had moved and left the wolf tied to a tree in the backyard. But the woman would not say which house, and would not give her name or number, and Chris's aunt would not tell us who this lady was. I know what you're thinking because I was thinking the same thing: This is bull%$%#.!!! Are we sure there even is a wolf? How do we know the wolf is there? No one has reported it. Apparently this lady had not even seen the wolf in the yard. She had just heard about it. For all we knew they took it with the

We both sat there in traffic. I saw the look in Paula's eyes. What if it was true and we didn't do anything about it? "Ok." I said, "Turn around. Let's go." "Community is supposed to be a very short street. We can just knock on a few doors or look for an abandoned house." Paula said. Turns out Community Street is miles of short strips of streets with a lot of empty houses. Chris was kind enough to drive out and meet us. He had called his aunt again but could get no more info from her. We had no idea where to start so we started at one end and worked our way down, asking neighbor after neighbor and telling them our crazy story. We called all the agents that had for-sale signs in the front yards. I have always believed that people are inherently good, but the people in this neighborhood really proved that to me. Everyone we met tried to help. They listened to our crazy story and even though we had no evidence to back it up, they got together and helped us anyway. It was actually a really wonderful journey. We met an 85 year old Cherokee man named Paul who taught us how to shake hands with people "the right way" he said, so you can feel the other person's pulse. Again, I know what your thinking, "A couple on a journey to find a wolf and they meet a native American? Come on! Really?" But it is true. Paula met a lady who told us about everyone in the neighborhood. And boy she knew a lot - more than we needed to know, in fact! But no wolf, so we moved on.

You have to bear in mind that we were both just out of bed and on our way to the chiropractor. We had just thrown on some sweats, were both dressed completely in black, I was unshaven in black knit cap, and I was shuffling around because of my back - not the most approachable couple in the hood. So when I hobbled over to Heather, a young athletic lady who was jogging with her two dogs and talking business on her bluetooth, she looked at me like, "What the hell!" But again, when Paula and I told her our story, she was on it. She called her friend Sani who came right over to help. Heather said that Sani knew everyone. If there is a wolf, she will know and she did. She pointed us to a house that was just off Community St. She said she had seen a dog that looked like a black wolf jumping up at the fence when she passed and the people who lived there were moving out. We found the house and Paula bravely walked up to the door and knocked. We half-expected to find some evil family that abused animals but what we found were Robert and Diane, a very sweet couple who had several kids. They had been forced to move, like so many others because of the economy, into a smaller place where Taboo, their black wolfdog who they loved very much, was not allowed. So our story was only half true. Yes, there was a wolf tied to a tree in a backyard of a house that was almost empty. But they had no intention of leaving her. They had been trying very hard to find a place for her and it seems we arrived just in time.

We did not have a truck with us that day so Taboo came with us to Wolf Connection in the back of my black Mustang. Very fitting. She looked cool! Not a lot of room for a 100 pound wolf in that backseat, but she snuggled with Paula the whole way. She was filled with lots of excitement, a whole bunch of drool, and a little bit of gas, but we all made it back safe and sound.

Paula and I and the whole Wolf Connection crew would like to say thank you to all the amazing people on Community St.

Steve Wastell and Paula Ficara
On set Silver Gardens with Maya, Wolf Connections Arctic Wolf!!!!tag:wolfconnectionpack.org,2010-10-23:3804523:BlogPost:172062010-10-23T04:00:00.000ZRenee Alferohttp://wolfconnectionpack.org/profile/ReneeDutcher

On Set with Maya, Wolf Connections Arctic Wolf!!!

I had filming this past week for a short Fantasy Action film called Silver Gardens. I was doing some stunt work as well as being a horse wrangler on set. Not written in the script of any wolves, but topic of me working with wolves came up ... so, since we have some scenes with an Native American, is seemed it would be great symbolism to have a wolf standing at his side.

So, to bring a very wolfie wolf and one who would do good with the crew and on set ... I brought Maya to be in the scene and Ayasha as support.

In thought of Maya being such a great program animal for Wolf Connection and my close bond with her, I figured she would do good on set :) .... turns out .... she was INCREDIBLE!!!!!!! Absolutely wonderful and friendly with all the crew, actors in costume, equipment, etc.

She was great!!! When it finally came to having her be atop the hill with David, that was the test to see how she was going to do. Cameras in her face, people with crazy looking equipment shining and moving, guys calling directions out and myself keeping her concentration on me and working with David :) It turned out to be perfect. (So glad I taught her how to sit and stay, simple behaviors that came in handy:)). She sat up there by David's side like a champ, focused on me and listening to my cues as everything around her continued. She sat, stayed, focused on me and looked magnificent!

Any time that she was slightly nervous, she would look at me with her stunning yellow eyes with the question of "Am I okay?" ... I stood confidently to connect my gaze with hers, and think "You're great, you're doing what I'm asking. I'm here with you, and that's all that matters." ... wow, to have such a connection and make such an accomplishment :) I'm so proud of her!

Having this awesome experience on set and to be able to bring Maya and work with her on such a unique project was amazing and leaves me speechless :)

Many thanks to Mehdi the Director, Scott, who asked for me to join him to help & it evolved to so much more, David, who did such a fantastic job with the wolves and all crew members for Silver Gardens!!

*Special thanks to Teo for letting me bring the pups and trusting me to have them on set and make something happen and have such an awesome experience!

Much Love, Hugs & Howls, Renee & Maya
