Wolf Connection

Today I learned the reality of what could happen if owners are irresponsible with their animals.

I have 2 hybrids and a Siberian husky that share my life with me (the sibe lives with me but I do not own her). I live on the coast and have an abundance of hiking trails behind my house and me and my dogs are out exploring and exercising on a daily basis. We do a lot of off leash hiking and rarely have problems, but in the end, none of my animals are 100% reliable off lead. If I am feeling under the weather, or "off" in anyway, my dogs test me, sensing my weakness and irritation in my energy and I know better then to take any risks with them. Period. I did my homework before I got my animals, talk and network with owners consistently, and have no excuse what so ever to be irresponsible. Having said all that, I decided to go explore a new place (semi rural area), in a rotten mood, with my dogs off lead, thinking that it would cheer me up. Half an hour into the walk horseback riders appear. All three were curious about the horses. I called them to me and my two hybrids came right away (thank god thank god thank god) but not the husky, who kept following the horses with no regard to me whatsoever. The horseback riders continued their ride with the sibe running along side them happily. Couldn't catch her, couldn't keep up on foot, had two other dogs on leash, and it was almost dark, in a place I was not familiar with. She finally got caught on a clump of bushes and I was able to catch her (over an hour later). My dog could and most likely would have died out in the wilderness over night, if it had gotten dark there was no way I would have been able to find her. It was a harsh reality of my irresponsibility as a pet owner. It's not the dogs fault, it's in her genes and breeding to run for miles and miles and go after prey. So many things could have gone wrong today that didn't. I am blogging about it because we all love our animals and want the best for them, and we all (or most of us) know what precautions to take with hybrids and any dog for that matter. No matter how reliable an animal is, there may be that one time, that one moment, that one chase after some other animal or thing, that could end it. Please be responsible and encourage others to as well.
